Croatian tennis player Marin Čilić (ATP-85) successfully opened his campaign at the ATP tournament in Montreal. In the first round on Monday, August 4, 2026, he defeated Japan's Sho Shimabukura (ATP-94) 7-6, 6-1 after an hour and a half of play.
The first set was marked by solid serving from both players. Neither Čilić nor Shimabukura dropped their serve, so the decision came down to a tie-break, where the Croatian was more successful. The picture was completely different in the second set. Čilić played much more aggressively and broke the Japanese player's serve early at 2-1, then extended his lead to 4-1 and eventually closed out the set routinely at 6-1.
Although Shimabukura fired six aces, double Čilić's two, the key difference lay in the number of unforced errors. The Japanese player made as many as 33, while Čilić stayed at 18. The Croatian player did not lose his serve even once and broke his opponent three times. Efficiency on the first serve was also in his favor, Čilić won 80 percent of those points, while Shimabukura won 70 percent.
This was the first head-to-head meeting between Čilić and Shimabukura. In the second round, the Croatian player will face the 15th seed, American Frances Tiafoe. The head-to-head record favors Čilić, who has won both of their previous encounters.
