The State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) has issued a red warning for extreme heat for Saturday and Sunday across the Rijeka, Split, and Dubrovnik regions. The most critical conditions will be in the far south of Croatia, where temperatures are expected to reach up to 38 degrees Celsius.
According to the forecast presented on HRT by DHMZ meteorologist Kristina Klemenčić Novinc, the red alert level indicates extremely dangerous weather with a very high risk of heat-related health impacts. In Dalmatia, temperatures on Saturday could reach 37 degrees in some places, while in the far south they will range between 35 and 38 degrees. Conditions will be slightly milder in the northern Adriatic, where highs of up to 34 degrees are expected.
Although heat will dominate, Saturday will also be more unstable. In inland areas, scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected, while the northern Adriatic will see strong bura winds. For Saturday, DHMZ has also issued yellow warnings for all climate zones of the Croatian Adriatic due to expected winds. In the Velebit Channel, the bura will reach storm-force gusts, with the warning in effect throughout the day.
Afternoon showers are also possible in the far south, primarily in the Konavle area, as well as in inland Dalmatia. In Istria and Gorski Kotar, there is also a chance of isolated showers. In eastern Croatia, lows will be around 21 degrees and highs between 31 and 33 degrees, while in the mountainous regions, the minimum temperature will be around 16 degrees.
On Sunday, conditions will stabilize, but red warnings for the Rijeka, Split, and Dubrovnik regions remain in effect. The high risk from heat along the Adriatic will continue into the second day of the weekend. Unlike Saturday, there are no orange or yellow temperature warnings on Sunday, and wind warnings will be significantly milder. A yellow warning for strong bura winds will be in effect only for the Velebit Channel during the morning hours.
The Osijek, Zagreb, Karlovac, and Gospić regions are marked green on Saturday, meaning no heat warnings are in place for them. The Knin region has a yellow warning due to potentially dangerous high temperatures. On Sunday, the Knin region will join these areas, and all will be green, with no warnings for high temperatures.
After the more unstable Saturday, mostly stable days follow. From Sunday, inland areas are expected to see predominantly sunny weather, with maximum temperatures gradually rising. From Monday, heat warnings are again forecast for most of the country. Local afternoon showers are possible, mainly in inland Dalmatia and Gorski Kotar, while on Tuesday they are expected in other areas as well. The Adriatic will see mostly sunny conditions, with temperatures remaining largely unchanged.
