DHMZ issues highest warning due to dangerous heat, temperatures could locally reach 39°C today, and no relief is expected soon.
Croatia is today, August 3, 2026, under the grip of an intense heat wave. The State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) has issued a red weather alert for the Zagreb and Split regions due to very high temperatures that pose an increased health risk. An orange warning is in effect for the rest of the country.
How sultry the nights have been is best illustrated by this morning's DHMZ measurements. Already at 6 AM, temperatures at several measuring stations were nearly tropical. The warmest was in the northern Adriatic, with Senj leading at 29.6°C. Rijeka followed with 29.3°C, while Veli Rat and Sv. Ivan out at sea recorded 27.2°C each.
High temperatures were also recorded in other coastal cities. Poreč had 27.1°C at 6 AM, Mali Lošinj and Opatija each 26.3°C, and Dubrovnik 26.2°C. At Split's Marjan, 25.9°C was measured, while Lastovo recorded 25.8°C.
According to DHMZ's forecast, frontal disturbances continue to bypass Croatia, and a very warm air mass persists over much of Europe. In the continental area, mostly clear skies are expected, with only a slight chance of a brief shower in the Danube region, inland Istria, Gorski Kotar, and parts of the Dalmatian hinterland during the afternoon.
Daily maximum temperatures will mostly range between 34 and 37°C, and in inland Dalmatia and the far south, they could locally reach 38 to 39°C. On the coast, a light to moderate southwest wind will occasionally ease the heat, but nights will remain very warm. Although the heat may briefly ease in parts of the country during the day, meteorologists warn it won't last long.
The brief easing of the heat won't last long. Already from Tuesday, DHMZ expects a new intensification of the heat wave and further temperature increases. Along the coast, sunny and dry weather will persist, while isolated afternoon showers are possible mainly in inland Dalmatia, Gorski Kotar, and parts of Istria.
