Jonas Vingegaard, the current Giro winner, has ended his season due to the effects of a broken collarbone and is shifting his focus to next year.
The current winner of the Italian Giro, Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard, has finished his season, his team Visma-Lease a Bike announced on Monday, August 17, 2026. The reason is a collarbone injury sustained in a crash at this year's Tour de France.
The two-time winner of the most famous cycling race crashed on July 19, 2026 during the 15th stage and had to abandon. Although nearly a month has passed since then, his recovery is not progressing quickly enough for the 29-year-old Dane to return to competitive form.
In an official statement from Visma-Lease a Bike, it was stated that Vingegaard "still feels the effects of the collarbone fracture he sustained in the crash at the Tour de France," and therefore "is not able to work on new competitive goals for 2026." The team said the Dane will "focus on recovery and training" in the coming period.
Vingegaard explained that after a long and intense racing period, a recovery phase after the Tour was already planned, but the injury disrupted his plans. "Because of the collarbone injury, I had to delay the start of training and am not able to return to top form in the coming period," the Danish cyclist said.
He added that the focus is on optimal preparation for next year's goals, and he will discuss specific targets with the team in the coming period.
Vingegaard was not officially entered for any race after the Tour de France, but there was hope he could recover in time for the World Championships, which will be held in Montreal at the end of September. That possibility has now definitively fallen through.
The collarbone injury has thus cut short the season for the two-time Tour de France winner, and all attention now turns to preparations for next year.
