  • Over the weekend of August 1 and 2, temperatures will reach up to 37 °C, and DHMZ has issued a warning for four regions.

Variable weather with showers and thunderstorms will mark the beginning of the week in Croatia, but from Wednesday onwards, a complete stabilization and a new heatwave will bring temperatures up to 37 degrees Celsius over the weekend. According to the latest forecast from the State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ), reported by Večernji list, today will be partly sunny with variable cloud cover, and localized showers with thunderstorms are possible in the morning on the Adriatic and areas adjacent to the Adriatic, and in the afternoon also inland, and occasionally in the northern Adriatic.

Wind will be light to moderate from the southwest and west, turning to north and northeast towards the end of the day, while on the Adriatic a light to moderate southerly wind will blow, still strong in the south, and in the afternoon mostly a southwesterly and northwesterly wind. The highest daily air temperature today and tomorrow will range between 27 and 32 °C, states DHMZ.

Tuesday Still Unstable, Dry and Warmer from Wednesday

On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, it will be mostly sunny, especially on the Adriatic. Inland, moderate cloud cover is expected in the first part of the day, and in the afternoon with stronger daytime cloud development, there may be showers in some places, mainly in Lika and inland Dalmatia. The wind will weaken, and daytime temperatures will again reach values between 27 and 32 °C.

From Wednesday, July 29, until the end of the week, the entire country will be under the influence of an anticyclone. According to Riportal, stabilization will bring mostly sunny, even clear weather, without precipitation. Temperatures will increase day by day, and from Thursday, they will frequently exceed 35 °C inland, marking the start of a new heatwave. Istramet has already announced that the beginning of August will also be hot.

Four Regions Under Warning

Due to the forecasted heatwave, DHMZ has already issued a moderate danger warning for the heatwave for Thursday, July 30, 2026, for the Gospić, Rijeka, Split, and Knin regions. The peak of the heat is expected over the weekend: on Saturday, August 1, temperatures across the country will rise above 35 °C, and on Sunday, August 2, they will occasionally reach 37 °C.

Europe in the Grip of Heat and Fires

While Croatia prepares for a new heatwave, parts of Europe are already battling the consequences of extreme temperatures. In France, about 220,000 people have been evacuated due to forest fires, reports Večernji list, citing reports from the New York Times and French authorities. The fires broke out last week near the Atlantic coast and are now only 15 kilometers from the entry points to the main urban area of Bordeaux, where a temperature of 37 °C is expected later this week.

"These are fires like we have never seen before," said Jerome Steffe, the mayor of Cestas, a suburb of Bordeaux from which thousands of people have been evacuated, on Monday. "It's a race against time before the heatwave returns," he added.

President Emmanuel Macron's government will discuss the fire situation at a cabinet meeting on Monday. In neighboring Spain, more than 75,000 people have been evacuated, and an additional 30,000 have been ordered to take shelter. High heat warnings are in effect in numerous European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, and Switzerland, Večernji list reminds.
