After a mostly sunny and hot Wednesday, Croatia is set for a gradual weather change that will first affect the northern Adriatic and Gorski Kotar, spreading to most of the country by Friday. According to the forecast from the State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ), rain and showers with thunderstorms could locally be more intense.
Hot Wednesday with highs up to 33 degrees
Wednesday will remain sunny and hot. In the morning, central and eastern areas may see temporary cloud cover, while in the afternoon, clouds are expected to form inland in Istria and Dalmatia. Daily maximum temperatures will range from 29 to 33 degrees.
Thursday brings the first signs of change
On Thursday, most of Croatia will still be mostly sunny, but cloud cover will gradually increase from the west over the northern Adriatic and Gorski Kotar. In these regions, occasional rain is possible, along with local showers and thunderstorms. Toward evening, precipitation may also appear in parts of central Croatia.
Winds will be moderate from the southwest, with occasional strong gusts at higher elevations, while the jugo (southerly wind) will strengthen on the Adriatic. Morning lows will range from 17 to 22 degrees, possibly reaching 25 degrees on the coast and islands. In most areas, daily highs will be between 30 and 35 degrees.
Friday brings a more pronounced change and heavier showers
A more significant change is expected on Friday when cloud cover will spread over most of the country. Showers may then appear in other regions, while in the northern Adriatic and Gorski Kotar they could be more intense and accompanied by thunderstorms. DHMZ warns that due to the localized nature of summer showers, rainfall amounts will not be uniform across all locations.
Thursday and Friday will be marked by southwest winds and the jugo. At higher elevations, gusts of southwest wind will be strong, and at sea, a moderate jugo will add to the muggy feel.
Weather calming down on Saturday
Weather is expected to calm down in the second half of Saturday. The southwest wind will gradually weaken, and on the Adriatic it will turn to a northwest wind. Although there will be rain and showers, temperatures will not drop drastically, and mornings will remain warm, especially along the coast.
