Digne Returns to PSG After 10 Years

Paris Saint-Germain has officially confirmed the return of Lucas Digne. The French left-back joins the European champions from Aston Villa, with the deal completed ten years after his first stint at the Parc des Princes. The transfer was also announced by renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano. Digne has signed a three-year contract with the Parisian club, with PSG activating the buyout clause in his Villa contract, worth £8.5 million.
According to information from Fabrizio Romano, Digne had 18 months left on his Aston Villa contract, with a book value of around €6 million. PSG offered €12 million fixed, plus an additional €3 million in bonuses. Aston Villa stands to make a profit of €9 million from the sale, which is significant for their balance sheet under financial fair play rules (PSR).
Villa had already secured an adequate replacement at left-back by bringing in Maatsen, making Digne's departure a logical progression. Digne is the third significant departure from Villa Park this season, following Morgan Rogers' move to Chelsea and Youri Tielemans' to Manchester United.
Digne made his first serious steps in senior football at PSG. At the time, he shared the dressing room with legends like Zlatan Ibrahimović and Thiago Silva. In his first spell, between 2013 and 2015, he made 30 appearances for the Parisian club before moving to Barcelona in 2016. That was followed by eight years in England, where he joined Aston Villa from Everton in 2022. Now he returns as a fully formed player and person.
"I return as a man and as a different player. I have more maturity and experience, and I want to pass that on to the team. This club is built for winning; it's in its DNA," Digne said at his unveiling.
His reunion with captain Marquinhos will be particularly emotional. The two arrived at PSG together ten years ago, and the Brazilian has since grown into one of the club's greatest legends.
Digne makes no secret of what returning to the Parisian crowd means to him, having already experienced it again as an Aston Villa player in the Champions League.
"The Parc des Princes is a magical place! Once you play there, you want to come back," added the French international.
Interestingly, his first match after returning in a PSG shirt could be against his former club, Aston Villa. Digne won the Europa League with Villa last season, the club's first trophy since 1996. Now he joins a team that has won the Champions League twice in a row, most recently beating Arsenal on penalties in the 2026 final. In Paris, he will provide competition for first-choice left-back Nuno Mendes.
