GNK Dinamo has reached the final step towards the Champions League. In the play-off, on August 18, 2026, at Maksimir Stadium, the Blues will host Norwegian side Viking FK, a club that last season ended Bodo/Glimt's dominance and, after a 34-year wait, clinched the league title.

"Let's go for the Champions League together! 💙✨", Dinamo said on their official Twitter profile, alongside details on ticket sales. "We know what's next 🙌💙", read another club post, featuring a photo of Luka Stanzl.

Oil city and football pride

Viking hail from Stavanger, a city in southwestern Norway that serves as the hub of the country's oil industry and one of the wealthiest parts of the nation. The club was founded back in 1899, and in its entire history, it has spent only three seasons outside the top flight of Norwegian football.

They have been Norwegian champions nine times and have lifted the national Cup six times. Their most successful period came between 1972 and 1975, when they won four consecutive titles. Their last championship before last season's triumph dated back to 1991, after which came a long journey that included relegation to the second tier and a subsequent rise back.

Shock win over Chelsea in 2002

Viking also boast a major European scalp in their history. In 2002, they knocked out London's Chelsea in the UEFA Cup. After a 2-1 loss in London, they won the return leg in Stavanger convincingly, 4-2, to progress. That feat is still talked about in Norwegian football to this day.

Last season, everything fell into place. Viking won the league title, sparking massive celebrations in Stavanger and across the Rogaland region. This season, they continue to perform well, after 17 rounds, Bodo/Glimt have a one-point lead, but Viking have a game in hand and a chance to return to the top.
