From August 3 to 9, 2026, the Međimurje police conducted intensified speed enforcement on roads in the county. The results of the week-long campaign, released on Tuesday, paint a worrying picture of some drivers' behavior, with a total of 232 violations of the Road Traffic Safety Act recorded. The operation was part of the international ROADPOL initiative focused on vehicle speed control, carried out simultaneously across Europe.
The most drastic case was recorded last Thursday, August 6, at 6:14 PM. On the 19th kilometer of the A4 Zagreb–Goričan motorway, where the speed limit is 130 km/h, a surveillance camera captured a car with Hungarian registration plates speeding at 222 km/h. This means it was traveling 92 km/h over the limit.
The vehicle is owned by a legal entity from Hungary. The police will send a notice of the committed violation to the owner's address. For driving on a road outside a built-up area at a speed more than 50 km/h above the limit, a fine ranging from 660 to 1,990 euros is prescribed, according to the statement. For comparison, during the same period in the Vukovar-Srijem County, an even more extreme case was recorded where a 32-year-old Swiss citizen drove at 230 km/h, resulting in a fine of 660 euros, three negative points, and a one-month ban on using a foreign license in Croatia.
Of the total 232 violations, as many as 115 were for improper speeding. However, that is not the only issue; the police also recorded 47 violations for not wearing seatbelts, indicating a worryingly low level of awareness about basic safety measures in traffic.
Additionally, seven drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, and six were improperly using their mobile phones while driving. There were also 11 cases of improper helmet use, five violations for improper stopping and parking, and one each for improper overtaking and passing, improper use of lights, and driving while under a driving ban. Two drivers were caught with expired registration documents, and two more were driving before obtaining the right to drive independently. The remaining 34 violations were categorized as other.
The Međimurje police have stated that intensified speed enforcement will continue on roads across the county, with a special focus on sections where speeding is most common. In the statement, they also issued a clear appeal to all road users.
"We call on all drivers to respect speed limits, adjust their speed to road conditions, and through their responsible behavior contribute to greater safety for all road users," the police emphasized.
