Two Lanes and 60 km/h: Accident and Breakdown Paralyze A3 and A6, Roadworks Threaten Delays Until October

The Croatian Automobile Club has reported a series of extraordinary events on motorways. On A6, a vehicle broke down, on A2 and A3 roadworks with narrowed lanes, and the forecast for Tuesday predicts congestion on several bypasses.

Summary
  • Due to an accident on the A3 near Zagreb zapad, traffic is moving in two lanes, and queues are expected.
  • Due to a broken-down vehicle on the A6 near Orehovica, traffic is moving in one lane with a 60 km/h limit.
  • Roadworks on the A2 and A3 cause lane narrowing and two-way traffic, lasting until September and October.
  • The forecast for Tuesday predicts congestion on the A3, A7, A2, and A4 bypasses.

A traffic accident on the slip road at the Zagreb zapad junction on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, reduced the A3 motorway to just two lanes, with a mandatory speed limit. At the same time, on the A6 Rijeka-Zagreb motorway, specifically at the Orehovica junction towards Zagreb, a broken-down passenger vehicle blocked the carriageway, so traffic there is moving in a single lane with a 60 km/h limit. The Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) reported these extraordinary events this morning, which are just the tip of the iceberg of restrictions on Croatian motorways.

Narrowed Lanes and Diverted Carriageway

On the A2 Zagreb-Macelj motorway, traffic is moving only in the driving lane on two sections. Towards Macelj, from km 17+500 to 13+750 on the Krapina, Đurmanec stretch, and towards Zagreb from km 6+700 to 8+200 on the Trakošćan, Đurmanec section. The situation on the A3 Bregana-Lipovac is even more complex, with active roadworks at two locations.

Until September 1, drainage rehabilitation is underway between the Popovača and Kutina junctions towards Lipovac, from km 90+700 to 93+800, where traffic runs in two narrowed lanes. The other works, between the Sveta Nedelja and Zagreb zapad junctions from km 12+480 to 15+300, will last until October 3. Due to the closed carriageway towards Lipovac, traffic is diverted onto the carriageway towards Bregana and runs in both directions, with two narrowed lanes in each direction. HAK explicitly warns that on these sections, especially on Fridays, weekends, and during morning and afternoon peak hours, delays and queues are almost inevitable.

Morning and Afternoon Peak Congestion

According to HAK's traffic forecast for Tuesday, increased traffic and slower driving are expected on city roads and bypasses during the morning and afternoon. Delays and queues are particularly anticipated on the Zagreb bypass (A3), the Rijeka bypass (A7), the A2 Zagreb-Macelj motorway at the Zagreb zapad junction, and on the A4 Goričan-Zagreb motorway between the Popovec and Zagreb istok junctions.

From midday, local showers with thunderstorms are possible, especially in Istria and Gorski Kotar, so HAK asks drivers to adjust their speed and pay special attention to the safety distance between vehicles, as roads will be wet and slippery. In case of congestion, drivers are reminded of the obligation to form an emergency corridor. Additional difficulties are expected for those traveling outside Croatia: at certain border crossings with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro, waiting times are recorded in passenger and freight traffic, while there are currently no difficulties in maritime traffic.
