Nearly 30 years after the tragic death of the Princess of Wales, her brother Charles Spencer publishes the memoir 'Swan Song: Diana, My Sister' with his own version of his sister's story.
Charles Spencer, brother of British Princess Diana, has announced the release of the book 'Swan Song: Diana, My Sister' in which, as he states, he will tell the truth about his sister from his own perspective. The book is expected to appear in the UK on September 22, 2026, nearly 30 years after Diana's tragic death in a car accident in Paris in 1997, reports the BBC.
Diana, the first wife of King Charles, died on August 31, 1997 at the age of 36, when the car she was traveling in with her lover Dodi Al-Fayed crashed in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris while being chased by paparazzi. Her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, were 15 and 12 years old at the time.
In a statement released on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Earl Spencer explained that he was prompted to write the book by the approaching 30th anniversary of his sister's death. "With the 30th anniversary of Diana's tragic death on the horizon, I am once again inundated with requests for interviews about my sister," Spencer said, adding that this convinced him to write down his own memories once and for all.
"This convinced me to write down my own thoughts and memories, once and for all, rather than uncomfortably reading others' opinions, many of which are based on untruths that have become accepted over time," Spencer stated.
The goal of the book, according to Spencer, is to tell the truth about Diana from her brother's perspective, "just as I tried to do when speaking at her funeral." In an emotional speech at Westminster Abbey in September 1997, he described her as a unique and dynamic person, full of love and charisma, but also self-doubt.
"I want to speak on Diana's behalf and do so in an openly positive way," Spencer said. He also hopes the book will reach generations born after her death: "I would be delighted if those who are too young to remember her in her time felt, after reading, that they finally understand who she really was."
At the funeral in 1997, Spencer called Diana "the most hunted person of the modern age," sharply criticizing the media, and publicly promised to protect William and Harry from a similar fate. The book, as the publisher announces, will not lack previously unknown details.
Daniel Bunyard, publishing director at Penguin Random House UK, said the book will be "of historical significance." "While these pages contain many revelations that will attract significant attention, readers will find, for the first time, but also forever, a worthy tribute to the beloved woman who was Princess Diana," Bunyard said.
The book will be published by Penguin Michael Joseph, part of the Penguin Random House publishing house.
