Police and fire inspector determine causes of two incidents on Krk Island: gas leak at hose-cylinder connection and electrical fault.
Two separate incidents on houses on Krk Island-a gas explosion in Baška and a fire in Bregi-resulted in one injury and property damage estimated at tens of thousands of euros. Investigations conducted by the police and a fire inspector revealed that the causes were technical in nature.
The gas explosion and subsequent small fire in a family home in Baška occurred on Thursday, August 7, 2026, at approximately 4:20 AM. The investigation determined that the most likely cause was a gas leak due to a technical fault at the connection between the hose and the gas cylinder. A 50-year-old woman was injured in the incident.
According to the findings, the detonation occurred when the woman turned on a light in the kitchen. The resulting spark ignited the gas mixture that had accumulated in the space, causing the explosion. The shockwave blew out doors and windows and shattered glass. Although a small fire broke out, firefighters from the KrK City Public Fire Brigade quickly extinguished it.
The day before, on Wednesday August 6, 2026, at around 9:30 PM, a fire broke out on a house in Bregi. The investigation determined that the cause was a fault in the electrical wiring in the roof area. Property damage is estimated at tens of thousands of euros.
Firefighters from the Opatija Public Fire Brigade arrived at the scene immediately after the alarm, but found the fire already well developed. The upper part of the auxiliary building with its roof burned, and part of the roof subsequently collapsed. Despite this, the firefighters managed to contain the fire in a relatively short time.
