The war in Ukraine has intensified in the Black Sea in recent days, with both sides stepping up attacks on port infrastructure and trade routes. Russia's Black Sea coast, particularly the port city of Novorossiysk, has been targeted by numerous Ukrainian drones, confirmed the governor of the Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratyev, via Telegram. The attacks killed three people, including an eight-year-old child, and injured at least 24 others, according to Tagesschau.

Ukraine Confirms Attacks on Russian Ports

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian forces carried out attacks on Novorossiysk using drones, cruise missiles, and naval drones. "Hits on air defense positions, piers, and seaport infrastructure have been confirmed," Zelensky wrote on Telegram.

Meanwhile, massive Ukrainian drone attacks also hit Sevastopol, a port on the annexed Crimean peninsula. The Moscow-installed governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, reported via the Russian state agency Tass that the city was left without power supply.

'Entire Trade Routes Are Being Destroyed'

ARD correspondent Silke Diettrich, reporting from the coastal town of Lermontovo, described the situation on ARD-Morgenmagazin. "The situation in the Black Sea is really escalating," Diettrich said, adding that not only military ports and ships are being attacked, but also grain ships and civilian ports. "Entire trade routes are being destroyed," she warned.

In her assessment, the goal of the intensified attacks could be to bring the conflict back onto the international stage. Attacks on trade routes that also affect other countries could trigger international problems and thus attract global attention.

Russian Retaliatory Strikes on Ukrainian Ports

On the night of August 13, 2026, Russia again attacked the area around Ukraine's largest Danube port, Izmail, an important transshipment point for grain and other raw materials. The town is located near the border with Romania, an EU and NATO member, which scrambled two fighter jets in response to the nighttime attacks.

Russian airstrikes also hit the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, where, according to regional authorities, a large fire broke out at a construction supply store and power outages occurred. The day before, on August 12, Russia announced an attack on the port in Odesa, where a fuel depot was hit, which, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, served to supply the Ukrainian military.

Data on the course of the war, shelling, and casualties published by official bodies of the warring parties cannot be independently verified in the current situation.
