Zadar police have reported a 39-year-old French citizen for attempted murder, with the attack occurring on August 15 at Prince Višeslav Square in Zadar.
Attempted murder, that is how the Zadar police have classified the attack that occurred on August 15, 2026, at 9:50 PM at Prince Višeslav Square. A report has been filed against the 39-year-old French citizen, who was handed over to the custody supervisor along with the criminal charges.
The victim is a 40-year-old Croatian citizen. The two men had been spending time together earlier, and on that fateful evening, a verbal argument broke out between them.
According to investigators, the Frenchman, with the intent to deprive the 40-year-old of his life, suddenly produced a sharp object and stabbed him in the chest area. The injured man managed to seek help.
The suspect was detained at the scene by an emergency medical technician until police officers arrived. The arrest was not peaceful: the 39-year-old put up strong resistance, flailing his arms uncontrollably and attempting to flee.
Officers were therefore forced to use coercive measures. During the operation, the suspect verbally attacked, insulted, and demeaned both the police and medical personnel.
At the police station, a breathalyzer test was administered. It showed that the attacker was under the influence of alcohol, but the exact concentration was not disclosed to the public.
The injured 40-year-old received emergency medical care at Zadar General Hospital, where he was diagnosed with serious bodily injuries. Police officers and crime scene technicians conducted a thorough examination of the attack site to collect all physical evidence.
The criminal report against the 39-year-old French citizen has been submitted to the County State Attorney's Office in Zadar. The case has now moved into the hands of the judicial institutions.
