The County State Attorney's Office in Zadar has ordered an investigation into a 39-year-old French citizen for the attempted murder of a 40-year-old Croatian citizen at Prince Višeslav Square.
In Zadar, the County State Attorney's Office has issued an order for an investigation into a 39-year-old French man suspected of attempting to kill a 40-year-old Croatian. The attack occurred on August 15, 2026, at approximately 9:50 PM at Prince Višeslav Square in Zadar, following a verbal altercation after the two men had been socializing together earlier.
According to the prosecution's suspicions, during the altercation, the 39-year-old stabbed the 40-year-old in the chest with a knife, inflicting a serious bodily injury, specifically an open chest wound. A third person prevented more severe consequences by stepping between them and pushing the suspect away, allowing the victim to flee and seek help.
According to the police report, the 39-year-old actively resisted arrest, flailing his arms uncontrollably and attempting to move away. During this time, he insulted and demeaned police officers and emergency medical personnel. A breathalyzer test confirmed the presence of alcohol in his system, although the measured concentration was not disclosed.
After questioning the suspect, the County State Attorney's Office in Zadar requested pretrial detention due to the risk of flight, potential influence on witnesses, and the danger of reoffending. The proposal was accepted by the investigating judge of the County Court in Zadar, who ordered detention. The legal qualification of the offense is Article 110 in conjunction with Article 34 of the Criminal Code.
The injured 40-year-old was treated at Zadar General Hospital, where he was hospitalized in the Department of Thoracic Surgery. The hospital confirmed to eZadar that the man sustained minor bodily injuries, while Dalmacija News reports that he was diagnosed with serious bodily injuries. While in the hospital, he signed a consent form for discharge and left the hospital at his own request.
