The Mayor of Dubrovnik sent congratulations to the Jug club for winning gold at the U20 European Championship, with a welcome for the water polo players expected tonight at 11:40 PM at Dubrovnik Airport.
Dubrovnik Mayor Mato Franković sent congratulations to the Water Polo Club Jug on winning the gold medal at the U20 European Championship. The congratulations were published on Monday, August 17, 2026, and were reported by Dubrovniknet.
Four members of the Dubrovnik club took part in winning the European title. They are water polo players Maro Šušić, Ante Jerković, and Antoan Špiljar, as well as coach Igor Računica, a member of the national team's coaching staff.
In his congratulations, Franković particularly highlighted their contribution: "Maro, Ante, and Antoan have shown through their play, fighting spirit, and unity why the Dubrovnik water polo school is one of the best in Croatia, while Igor has made a valuable contribution to this great result with his knowledge and experience."
This European gold continues an impressive run for Croatia's younger national teams. Before the U20 team, the U16 and U18 teams had already won world titles, completing a trio of major trophies for Croatia in a short period.
"After two world golds, the European one has arrived! After the U16 and U18 teams became world champions, you have won the European title with the U20 team and continued the impressive run of success for Croatian youth water polo," the mayor said.
Franković concluded his congratulations with words directed at the entire national team, the head coach, the coaching staff, and the Croatian Water Polo Federation, emphasizing that the gold is "a reward for hard work and talent, but also a great inspiration for all young athletes who follow in your footsteps."
According to information from Dulist, the national team will land at Dubrovnik Airport at 11:40 PM tonight on a flight from Zagreb. Among the passengers will be the four Jug players returning home with European gold.
"Dear Maro, Ante, Antoan, and Igor, we are proud of you! May this European gold be an additional incentive for all new challenges," Franković concluded.
