Zadar-born singer proposes direct financial aid for fire victims, bypassing charity concerts.
In the wake of the catastrophic wildfire that ravaged the Omiš area, Mladen Grdović has come forward with a concrete aid proposal. This morning, on August 16, 2026, the Zadar-born singer took to Facebook to urge his fellow entertainers to immediately donate €5,000 each for the victims, rather than waiting for charity concerts to be organized.
Grdović directed his appeal to the Croatian Music Union (HGU) and all registered performers, suggesting direct monetary assistance. "Let's do it this way... The HGU is the main body for performers, I mean singers, klapa groups, etc. We don't need to organize concerts; instead, let's each immediately donate five thousand euros," Grdović wrote on Facebook, as reported by Nacionalno Plus.
According to his calculations, if all 5,000 registered performers donated €5,000 each, a total of €25 million could be raised for the victims. The singer stated he is ready to be the first to participate and called on the HGU to publish an official account for donations.
"I'll be the first to give; just tell me where to send the money," Grdović said, adding: "Everyone's a star, everyone's earning, everyone's got a big mouth. I'll be the first to give; just tell me where to send it."
In an emotional appeal, he also addressed those with average or lower incomes. "Dear people, are you with me, those of you earning €400 a month? I'll be the first to give; just tell me where to send the money," Grdović wrote, emphasizing that those who live off the audience have a moral duty to stand by the people in their darkest hours.
He also reflected on his 45 years in the music industry, noting that the audience and ordinary people have bought tickets and supported him and his colleagues all these years. "Now it's time to give back to the people," he said.
Grdović called on the media and relevant institutions to help open an official account so the campaign can start without delay. "This is a lot of money; respond because the situation is dire," the singer appealed, adding: "I've said it honestly, let's get moving right away."
His proposal has already sparked a wave of positive reactions among citizens, but the response from the HGU and the rest of the music scene is still pending.
