Guillamón debuts for Sporting, gets injured immediately: a month on the sidelines awaits

Hugo Guillamón (26), until recently a Hajduk player, couldn't have imagined a worse start in the Sporting Gijón shirt. In the first round of the Spanish second division against Sabadell, he came off the bench in the 62nd minute, replacing Iosifov, but by the 67th minute he had to ask for a substitution. The reason was an injury to his right calf, and the match ended goalless, 0-0.
Spanish sports daily AS reports that Guillamón felt a strong pull as early as the second ball he touched, and he spent only about three minutes on the pitch before it became clear he couldn't continue. After the match, he left the stadium on crutches, and further examinations revealed a tear in the muscle fibers of his right calf. He faces at least a month on the sidelines.
Nicolás Larcamón, Sporting's coach, didn't hide his surprise. "His injury caught us off guard because he had no issues during the week," he said after the match.
Guillamón arrived in Gijón at the end of July, after mutually terminating his contract with Hajduk a year before it was due to expire. He signed with the Spanish second-tier side until the summer of 2028. He came to Split last summer as one of the more high-profile signings, but failed to make an impact. This summer, he was no longer in coach Gonzalo García's plans, so he was given permission to find a new club.
Before coming to Croatia, the player, who can cover both center-back and defensive midfield, spent his entire senior career at Valencia. He also earned caps for the Spanish senior national team, and Luis Enrique took him to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Sporting had high hopes for Guillamón, bringing him in as a key player in a project aimed at returning to La Liga. The Asturian club made numerous signings ahead of the season, and Guillamón was earmarked for an important role in midfield. Instead, his league debut lasted just a few minutes, and now he faces missing several matches at the start of the season.
