Traffic Jams and Queues on Roads: Accident in the Trsat Tunnel

Drivers on Croatian roads on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, faced congestion and slow-moving traffic on several key routes. According to the latest report from the Croatian Automobile Club (HAK), a traffic accident in the Trsat Tunnel on the A7 motorway towards Rupa is the main cause of the problems, with queues also forming on the approaches to the Krk Bridge and on the DC58 state road near Šibenik.

Accident in the Trsat Tunnel and Other Incidents

Due to the traffic accident in the Trsat Tunnel, traffic on this section of the A7 is moving in a single lane, with a speed limit of 40 km/h. As reported by Croatian Motorways (HAC) and HAK in their first updates at 11:22 AM, the accident occurred on the Rijeka bypass, on the carriageway towards Rupa. "Traffic is moving in one lane with a speed limit," stated HAC and HAK, urging drivers to exercise extra caution. At the same time, on the A1 motorway, in the Mala Kapela Tunnel towards Zagreb, a broken-down vehicle in a lay-by is causing traffic to move with a speed limit of 60 km/h.

Traffic is also significantly heavier on the Krk Bridge towards the island of Krk, where the queue stretches between the Šmrika junction and Omišalj. Slow-moving traffic in a queue is also reported on the DC58 state road in Šibenik due to another traffic accident.

Roadworks and Long-Term Restrictions on Motorways

In addition to current incidents, drivers must also contend with numerous longer-term restrictions. On the A2 Zagreb-Macelj motorway, traffic is moving in a single lane on the sections at Krapina, Đurmanec towards Macelj, and Trakošćan, Đurmanec towards Zagreb. On the A3 Bregana-Lipovac motorway, the Kraljeva Velika north and south rest areas are closed until August 31. Traffic is also moving in one lane at the Zagreb zapad (Jankomir) junction until December 31, and due to drainage repairs between the Popovača and Kutina junctions, two narrowed lanes are in use until September 1.

Due to roadworks between the Sveta Nedelja and Zagreb zapad junctions, which last until October 3, the carriageway towards Lipovac is closed, and traffic is being diverted to the opposite carriageway. On the A4 motorway, on the Zagreb istok-Popovec section, two-way traffic is in place until August 30 with a speed limit of 80 km/h towards Goričan. On the Istrian Y (A8/A9), construction of the full motorway profile is underway, with special traffic regulation and possible temporary traffic stops on the Učka Tunnel-Matulji junction section, and on the Limska Draga viaduct, passage for exceptional transports wider than 3.00 meters is restricted.

Bans for Heavy Goods Vehicles and Exceptional Transports

A summer traffic ban is also in effect for heavy goods vehicles with a maximum permissible mass exceeding 7.5 tonnes on certain state roads in Istria and the coastal area. The ban applies until September 15, on Saturdays from 4:00 AM to 2:00 PM and on Sundays from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

Additional difficulties may be caused by exceptional transports. Between August 11 and 13, during the night from 12:01 AM to 5:00 AM, two exceptional transports, 98 meters long, as part of logistical support for Ministry of Interior personnel, will pass from the Bregana border crossing to the Goričan border crossing. This will result in brief traffic stops on the A3 and A4 motorways, lasting up to 15 minutes. Additionally, until September 5, 2026, during the night from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM, an exceptional transport is taking place on the route from the Karamatići border crossing to the Bisko junction on the A1 motorway.

Overview of Closed and Difficult Sections of State Roads

On state roads across the country, a number of bans and closures are in effect. Among the more significant are:

• DC8 (Adriatic Highway): Due to the bura wind, traffic is banned for Group I vehicles (double-decker buses, motorcycles, camper trailers) on the section between Bakar and Sveta Marija Magdalena.
• DC14: Until January 31, 2027, due to the poor condition of the road surface and bridge, traffic is banned for all vehicles between the towns of Poznanovec and Dubovec.
• DC24: Until December 31, a traffic ban is in effect for heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes on the Rakovec-Varaždinske Toplice section.
• DC28: Until August 25, the section between Bjelovar and the town of Letičani is closed.
• DC29: Until August 12, the Kašina-Laz Bistrički section is closed. A detour for vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes leads via Soblinec and Moravče, and for heavier vehicles via Marija Bistrica and the Zagreb bypass. Until September 21, the section between Prepuštovec and Gajec is also closed, and until November 2, the section in Novi Golubovec.
• DC34: Until September 1, the Donji Miholjac-Sveti Đurađ section is closed.
• DC38: Until December 15, the section in Požega is closed due to the reconstruction of the Veličanka bridge, and until September 9, the section between the towns of Blacko and Vesela is also closed.
• DC42: In Hreljin Ogulinski, until December 31, traffic is banned for vehicles over 15 tonnes across the bridge on the Dobra River.
• DC99 and LC58107: Due to wind, there is a traffic ban for Group I vehicles on the sections Križišće junction-Križišće and Kraljevica-Križišće junction.
• DC213: Until December 31, there is a traffic ban for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes on the Erdut II bridge.
• DC204: Until December 31, due to damage to the bridge in the town of Pribanjci, traffic is banned for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes.
• DC214: Due to roadworks on the bridge in Gunja, traffic is banned for heavy goods vehicles and buses.
• DC546: The section in Petričko Selo is closed until further notice.
• DC547 (Majstorska cesta): Due to road surface damage, traffic is banned for all vehicles on the Sveti Rok - Jasenice section until further notice.
