On Saturday, August 9, 2026, Arsenal officially unveiled their biggest signing of the summer, Brazilian international Bruno Guimaraes. The Gunners paid Newcastle United £75 million for the 28-year-old midfielder, who promised a warrior-like approach and a fight for trophies at the Emirates Stadium. The unveiling took place ahead of a friendly against Borussia Dortmund. However, while the club is in a state of euphoria, legendary Dietmar Hamann warns that the real test lies ahead for the Brazilian.
Former Liverpool midfielder and 2005 Champions League winner Dietmar Hamann believes Guimaraes, despite his excellent performances for Newcastle, has yet to prove he belongs at the very top. Speaking to Sports Mole, Hamann pointed out that Brazil had problems in midfield at the World Cup, alluding to Guimaraes' role.
"Bruno was a great player for Newcastle, and he was captain, he led, he led from the front. But we saw him at the World Cup. I think some of the biggest problems for the Brazilian national team were in the middle of the park. I think he has to prove that he is really top class," said Hamann.
He added that the fee is huge, although not as big as some other transfers this summer, like those of Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson. Hamann believes Arsenal expects goals from open play from the Brazilian, something they lacked last season as they relied too heavily on set pieces. "I think what they want from him is to become a bit more adventurous from midfield. He is a very good player. To show he is top class, I think he now has to prove it at Arsenal," he concluded.
On the other hand, Arsenal are not hiding their excitement. Sporting director Andrea Berta emphasized Guimaraes' mentality and versatility. "We are delighted to welcome Guimaraes to our club. Bruno is a player with great mentality and great quality, who will bring strong leadership to our team," said Berta, adding that the Brazilian can play both as a defensive midfielder and as a 'box-to-box' player.
Manager Mikel Arteta particularly highlighted the energy and ambition of the new signing. "I am very happy to have Bruno with us. The energy he brings, and the hunger and desire to come here and create great history with the club. He has the ambition to take us to the next level," Arteta said, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
Guimaraes himself revealed an interesting anecdote from his arrival. His new midfield partner, Declan Rice, sent him a humorous welcome message, referencing their previous on-field battles. "Rice sent me a message: 'Come here and please, no more fights, we are friends now,'" the Brazilian recounted.
Guimaraes, who was also persuaded to make the move by compatriot Gabriel Magalhaes, sent a clear message to fans during his unveiling. "I will be a WARRIOR. I will give my all for this club until the end," he declared, adding: "I am very excited. I am at a stage in my life where I need a challenge like this. I want to win trophies, I want to write history, and I think I am in the right place to do that."
