The Croatian Football Federation published a detailed referee analysis of the first round of the SuperSport HNL on August 4, 2026. The focus was on four controversial situations from three different matches, and the Referee Commission backed the decisions of the main referees and VAR interventions in all cases.
Analysts had the most work with the match Istra 1961 - Lokomotiva, officiated by Pavlešić. Already in the 32nd minute, a player from Istra wearing number 30 scored a goal that was initially allowed. After a VAR intervention and review of the footage, the referee disallowed the goal due to an offside position of the player wearing number 22.
The technical analysis showed that the attacker was in a clear offside position, about five meters away from the goalkeeper. Although the goalkeeper had a full view of the ball without any clear obstruction, the Commission supports the VAR intervention due to the potential impact on the opposing player. Interestingly, given the borderline nature of the situation, the Commission expects that the initial on-field decision (allowing the goal) would also have been acceptable.
The second situation occurred in the 90th minute. After a corner kick, a player from Lokomotiva wearing number 8 headed the ball towards the goal, and the goalkeeper deflected it. Although the ball had fully crossed the goal line, the referee let play continue. VAR recommended a review due to a potential offside by Lokomotiva's player number 4, but the analysis showed there was no physical contact or clear obstruction of the goalkeeper's line of sight. The Commission fully supports the VAR intervention and the final decision to award the goal.
In the match Gorica - Osijek, officiated by Vukančić, a situation from the 12th minute was analyzed. Gorica's defender, number 45, held Osijek's attacker, number 48, by the upper part of his shirt during a dribble. The referee was perfectly positioned, awarded a penalty kick, and booked the defender. The Commission fully supports this decision, emphasizing that the shirt pull was obvious and continuous.
The last analyzed situation came from the match Varaždin - Hajduk, officiated by Kolarić. In the 87th minute, Hajduk's attacker, number 7, entered the penalty area, and Varaždin's defender, number 8, tripped and brought him down. The referee initially awarded an indirect free kick and booked the attacker for simulation, but VAR recommended a review of the footage.
The technical analysis confirmed that the defender did not touch the ball, and the movement of his right leg presented a clear obstacle to the attacker. The contact was evident. The Commission fully supports the VAR intervention and the referee's final decision - awarding a penalty kick and overturning the caution to the attacker.
