Croatian Diesel Cheaper Than in BiH for the First Time

From Tuesday, August 11, 2026, Croatian drivers can expect lower bills at gas stations, with diesel prices drawing particular attention. Eurodiesel will drop to €1.71 per liter, marking the first time since the onset of the current fuel crisis that this type of fuel is cheaper in Croatia than the average diesel price in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenković confirmed the new price cuts for all major fuel types. In addition to diesel, Eurosuper 95 will cost €1.56 per liter from Tuesday. At the same time, the government is introducing a change in the pricing model, with maximum retail fuel prices no longer adjusted every two weeks but every seven days.
According to data analyzed by Večernji list, the average price of D5 diesel in BiH currently stands at 3.37 KM, or €1.72 per liter. From Tuesday, Croatian Eurodiesel will be one cent cheaper per liter. On a 50-liter tank, that difference amounts to just 50 cents, but symbolically it is much greater.
During the earlier period of the fuel crisis, Croatia often had higher fuel prices than BiH, prompting drivers, especially in the border regions of Dalmatia, to keep a close eye on prices across the border. Now the situation has reversed, although caution is needed with generalizations, as prices in BiH vary significantly from town to town.
Specific on-the-ground data show how important local differences can be. In Čapljina, on August 9, the cheapest diesel was 3.31 KM per liter (around €1.69), while the average price at 12 monitored gas stations was 3.38 KM (around €1.73). The highest diesel price was 3.46 KM per liter.
In Ljubuški, prices were slightly more favorable. The cheapest diesel cost 3.23 KM per liter (around €1.65), with an average price of 3.34 KM (around €1.71) across 13 stations. This means the average price in Ljubuški is practically on par with the new Croatian price, while at the cheapest station, diesel is still about six cents cheaper per liter.
On a 50-liter tank, the difference between the Croatian price and the cheapest diesel in Čapljina is about one euro in favor of BiH, while compared to the average price in Čapljina, Croatian diesel is cheaper by about €1.20. In Ljubuški, the difference between the cheapest diesel and the Croatian price is about three euros on a full tank.
For gasoline, the situation remains unchanged. Eurosuper 95 in Croatia will cost €1.56 per liter from Tuesday. In BiH, the average price of Premium 95 is 2.96 KM, or €1.51 per liter, meaning gasoline in the neighboring country is still about five cents cheaper. The average price of Super 98 in BiH is 3.14 KM, or €1.60 per liter.
In Čapljina, the average price of Super 95 is 3.01 KM (around €1.54), with the cheapest available at 2.95 KM. In Ljubuški, the average is 2.97 KM (around €1.52), while the cheapest is 2.81 KM.
The government has announced that maximum retail fuel prices will now change every seven days, instead of the previous two-week model. The goal is to align more quickly with market price movements, which could bring drivers more frequent but smaller price fluctuations.
It is important to note that fuel prices in BiH are not uniform across all towns or at all gas stations. Therefore, for Croatian drivers crossing the border, relying solely on the national average is not enough; it is essential to check current prices at specific locations.
