Croatia's junior eight finished fourth in the final of the World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, missing the bronze medal by just over two seconds. The crew of Šime Grubišić, Vice Alfier, Marko Sredić, Adrian Erceg, Ante Politeo, Fran Alibegović, Tin Matešin, Pavao Čurković, and coxswain Marijeta Slugan rowed two excellent races, but ultimately the podium slipped away.
Great Britain took gold with a time of 5:33.84, silver went to the USA (5:36.46), and Germany claimed bronze (5:37.22). The Croatian crew crossed the line in 5:39.70.
According to the Croatian Rowing Federation, the eight started with great determination but then rowed perhaps a bit too cautiously, careful not to go into the red. As a result, they fell behind the leading crews of Great Britain and Germany in the first part of the race. At the halfway mark, they settled into a strong rhythm and launched a chase for a medal, closing in on the American crew holding third place.
Despite the attack and a superb finish, they couldn't overtake the Americans. Still, fourth place behind three rowing powerhouses is considered a remarkable achievement and a sign of future potential.
"Šime, Vice, Marko, Adrian, Ante, Fran, Tin, Pavao, and Marijeta, you rowed two excellent races and did Croatian rowing proud. Bravo. You gave it your all!" the Croatian Rowing Federation said.
Coach Milan Radečić carefully built the crew throughout the season, selecting them through fierce competition in the pairs. Occasional assistance with the rowing technique came from the celebrated coxswain of the bronze-medal eight from the Sydney Olympics, Silvijo Petriško, who also mentored coxswain Marijeta Slugan.
Young Croatian rower Petra Mardešić concluded her World Championship campaign with a race in the B final. She crossed the line second with a time of 07:47.93, behind Danish rower Nielsen (07:44.64). This secured her an overall eighth place among junior women worldwide, with her fastest rowing of the championship.
Mardešić started the race attached to the main group but at the back of it. Over the course, she gradually moved up, entering the final 500 meters in second place. In a tight battle with a Belgian rower, she delivered a brilliant finish and broke away by more than a boat length.
