After USKOK released expert findings showing elevated concentrations of hazardous substances in water, the Croatian Institute of Public Health issued a clear appeal to citizens.
The Croatian Institute of Public Health (CIPH) issued recommendations for the citizens of Gospić on August 7, 2026, following USKOK's release of expert findings from the illegal waste dump site. The results revealed alarmingly elevated concentrations of several harmful substances in water downstream from the location.
In a statement to N1, the CIPH delivered a clear and unequivocal appeal: "Do not touch the waste or contaminated soil!"
Among the detected contaminants, the so-called "forever chemicals", PFAS compounds, which are extremely persistent in the environment and the human body, are particularly concerning. However, that's not all; the analysis also confirmed the presence of heavy metals: copper, zinc, lead, and antimony, as well as other substances.
USKOK linked the expert findings directly to the illegal dumping of waste in the area, which has raised alarm and prompted calls for clarification regarding potential risks to human health.
The key message from the CIPH is to avoid any physical contact with the waste and contaminated soil. Citizens are advised to exercise caution and monitor further official announcements.
