In the latest beta version of iOS 27, references to a tool called "Apple Reference Image" have been discovered, whose purpose is to verify the authenticity of photos taken with an iPhone. This move comes at a time when, due to the pervasive generative artificial intelligence, verifying the origin of digital content is more important than ever.
According to information published on Monday, August 10, 2026, by MacRumors, a reference to the new feature was found in a privacy document within iOS 27 beta 5. The system will rely on a special "Reference" mode in the Camera app. When the user enables it, information about the origin is embedded in the photo's metadata.
Authentication will be triggered by tapping the "Reference" badge on the image. At that point, the raw photo, sensor signatures, capture time frame, and unique hardware identifiers of the sensor are sent to Apple's Private Cloud Compute (PCC) servers. PCC then determines whether the photo was indeed taken by an iPhone camera, assigns it a unique ID, and returns a certified version to the user.
Apple's privacy statement emphasizes that during verification, the company receives sensor data, a hash, and evaluation results, but not the raw photo. Additionally, Apple may refuse to authenticate images from a sensor suspected of being compromised, as well as retroactively revoke previous certifications from that sensor.
Interestingly, the document also mentions "photos or videos" and "uncropped captures," suggesting that the tool could support video content in the future. Certified photos will be viewable on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
As Engadget writes, most existing tools to combat AI misinformation have relied on digital watermarks on AI-generated content, such as those in Apple's Image Playground or Google's SynthID program. "Apple Reference Image" represents a different approach, it creates a certificate of authenticity for real content, which could be a useful counterbalance to existing efforts.
This system hardware-verifies that an image was produced by a physical camera sensor. Similar authentication systems are used by camera manufacturers like Leica, Sony, and Nikon through the C2PA Content Credentials standard, which Google has also adopted for its Pixel 10.
Since everything is being revealed in the beta testing phase, it is not ruled out that "Apple Reference Image" will not be part of the public version of iOS 27 when it is released this fall.
