Just a few weeks ago, few in Croatia knew his name. Today, Armando Leon (26) is the central figure at Osijek after scoring twice against Rudeš in his first start in the SHNL on Saturday, August 8, 2026, hinting that the Blue-Whites might have found their solution up front.
This Mexican center-forward arrived at Opus Arena on trial from Andorran side Ranger's. He passed the trial period and signed a one-year deal on July 23, with an option for extension. Already in the second league round, he demonstrated why the club decided to keep him.
Leon made his minutes count against Rudeš, scoring in the 12th minute. He made an excellent run between the center-backs to meet a through ball from Luka Vrbančić and slotted home for 1:0. Just 16 minutes later, following a dribble by Roko Jurišić, he was in the right place at the right time to tap in from close range for 2:0. By halftime, Osijek was already 4:0 up, and the Mexican forward also pressed for the fourth goal, scored by Nail Omerović.
In the first-round match against Gorica, he played 45 minutes in a 2:0 win, while against Rudeš he started for the first time. He repaid the trust in the best possible way.
Standing 189 centimeters tall, Leon plays as a classic center-forward. Already after the first training sessions, teammates mentioned that his physical build and movements reminded them of Ramón Mierez, one of the most prolific strikers to have worn the Osijek jersey in recent times.
"They told me right away, probably after the first training session. I heard he was an excellent scorer. I'll try to live up to the expectations," Leon said upon signing the contract.
His arrival in Osijek was no coincidence. Leon had previously worked in Andorra with the new Blue-White coach, Federico Bessone, who knew him well before inviting him to preseason. Bessone insists on aggressive pressing and vertical play, and Leon highlighted exactly that as his main strength.
Against Rudeš, that was evident in the fourth goal, when he and Omerović forced the visiting defense into a mistake with a double press.
Leon was born in Ensenada and learned his football at Pachuca. He later made it to the senior team of León, but couldn't establish himself long-term there. He also played for Alebrijes de Oaxaca, and with León he lifted trophies, winning the Mexican Apertura in 2020 and the Leagues Cup in 2021.
Having failed to find consistency at home, he made a rather unconventional move in 2024 and continued his career in Andorra. It was there that he flourished: for Ranger's in the 2024/25 season, he scored 20 league goals in 29 appearances. The following season, he played for Ranger's and briefly for Santa Coloma, adding another ten goals in 24 league matches. Particularly memorable was a match in May 2025, when he scored a hat-trick in Ranger's 5:0 win over Santa Coloma.
The Andorran league is, of course, far below the SHNL in quality, which is exactly why Leon arrived in Osijek without any fanfare and without a transfer fee. The club has left behind two very poor seasons marked by numerous failed signings, and this summer the budget was reduced with the announcement of a new, more cautious transfer policy.
Leon is almost a textbook example of that approach. He arrived on a free transfer, first had to justify his trial invitation, and was given a short-term contract, minimizing Osijek's financial exposure. On the other hand, he is a 26-year-old striker who has consistently found the net in recent seasons and is well known to the coach.
Two goals against Rudeš don't mean Osijek has already unearthed a new Mierez, especially against an opponent that just returned to the top flight. But for a player who came on trial from Andorra just a few weeks ago, the start could hardly have been better. If it turns out that the goals against Rudeš weren't an isolated flash, Osijek could have one of the most interesting deals of the transfer window in a player for whom they didn't have to pay a single euro in transfer fees.
