Jacob Bergstrom's story sounds like a movie script that few take seriously. The Swedish Mjällby striker wasn't part of professional football until he was 22, and now, at 31, he has historic achievements with the club and a goal on his Champions League debut behind him.
His path to the top was neither quick nor easy. Bergstrom joined Mjällby in 2018, but even after arriving at the club, he continued working at a Subway restaurant to cover his daily expenses. It wasn't until he was 24 that he became a full-time professional, which is much later than is typical for players at the highest level.
When he arrived, Mjällby were competing in the third tier of Swedish football. "When I first came, we were in the third division. I was overjoyed to sign. It was huge for me at the time," Bergstrom told BBC Sport.
Over the past year, Bergstrom helped Mjällby win the Swedish league title and the cup, the first such trophies in the club's 87-year history. In his first Champions League appearance, he scored immediately, completing a remarkable journey from amateur pitches to the grandest European stage.
Years after the signing that was "huge" for him then, the same club has become league champions, cup winners, and participants in Europe's most prestigious club competition.
The next hurdle in Mjällby's European adventure is Slovan Bratislava. The Slovakian side is coached by Yaya Toure, former Manchester City midfielder and Champions League winner. Thus, the match offers an unusual clash between a player who spent a long time playing amateur football and a coach who was one of the world's biggest stars during his career.
Bergstrom admitted to BBC Sport that he couldn't have imagined such a career trajectory. He is especially pleased to be experiencing the most important moments with the club he joined while playing far from the spotlight of major European football. He emphasized that he never even dreamed of such success because it seemed utterly impossible.
Mjällby now aims to extend their European story and eliminate Slovan Bratislava. Regardless of the outcome, their striker's journey has already shown that a professional career doesn't have to start at a top academy. From making sandwiches to scoring in Europe, he got there through perseverance, hard work, and belief in an opportunity that arrived later than he thought.
