Fire in the abandoned building of the former Uljanik barracks was quickly contained. The property was sold in 2024 for €7.9 million, with the Republic of Croatia becoming the majority owner.
A fire broke out at 5:45 AM this morning in the abandoned building of the former Uljanik barracks, known to locals as "Saura." The Pula Public Fire Brigade dispatched four fire engines with 14 firefighters to the scene, who contained the blaze by 6:20 AM, as reported by the JVP Pula to Dnevno.hr.
After containment, firefighters remained on site to secure the building. Police also arrived to conduct an investigation, after which more details about the cause of the fire and any potential damage will be released.
The "Saura" building has been part of Pula's industrial and labor heritage for decades, serving as a reminder of the time when the Uljanik shipyard was one of the city's key economic symbols. In recent years, the building has been mostly empty and neglected.
It is located in the Monte Zara area, on a plot of just over 20,000 square meters. The fate of this site came into focus in 2024 when it was sold for a total of €7.9 million.
The majority stake of 64.6 percent, for which €5.1 million was allocated, was purchased by the Republic of Croatia. The remaining 35.4 percent, for €2.8 million, went to LNS International Limited. It is not yet known whether this morning's fire will affect plans for the future of this Pula landmark.
