The open-space fire on Pelješac, reported on August 14, 2026, is under control. The Croatian Firefighting Association reported that the fire affected grass, low vegetation, and pine forest, with a total of 500 hectares burned.
On August 17 and 18, firefighters worked day and night on extinguishing and monitoring the fire site. However, due to a flare-up in one section, a Canadair CL-415 firefighting aircraft was deployed to assist the crews.
County Fire Chief Stjepan Simović told Soundset Ragusa that extreme caution is required with such large fires.
"Last night, or rather in the early evening, a small amount of smoke appeared on the western side. We reacted quickly. We headed toward the top of that western section. Since I had a waterbomber near Pelješac, we responded by sending it to reconnoiter the situation. It arrived around dusk, dropped three bombs, and confirmed everything was fine. After that, firefighters climbed up to the fire site last night, to the spot where the smoke was coming from, and worked through the night to remediate the situation. It was a minor smoke emission, but we must always remain vigilant with fires of this magnitude," Simović said.
The Croatian Firefighting Association confirmed in a statement that the fire is under control and that firefighters worked on extinguishing and monitoring the site during August 17/18.
