Summary
  • A 25 km long queue formed on the A1 near Karlovac due to an accident at the 34th km in the direction of Dubrovnik.
  • Congestion spilled over to the old Karlovac road (DC1), where traffic is also moving slowly in queues.
  • Delays are also present on the A2 (Trakošćan), A3 (Lučko), and A4 (Popovec), and HAK urges caution and patience.

The start of the week brought serious traffic congestion on Croatian highways, with the most critical situation on the A1 Zagreb-Split-Dubrovnik. Due to a traffic accident that occurred on Monday, August 3, 2026, between the Draganić rest area and the Karlovac interchange, in the direction of Dubrovnik, a queue estimated at up to 25 kilometers long has formed, according to various sources.

The Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) reported an extraordinary event at the 34th kilometer of the highway. While Zagreb.info and Tportal report the queue reaching about 25 kilometers, HRT Vijesti reports a slightly shorter queue of about 19 kilometers. Regardless of the exact figure, it is clear that this is a major bottleneck seriously slowing down travel toward the Adriatic.

Congestion Spills Over to Alternative Routes

Due to the standstill on the A1, drivers have sought alternative routes, but the situation there is not much better. On state road DC1, known as the old Karlovac road, traffic from Zagreb toward Karlovac is very heavy, with vehicles moving slowly in queues. Additional difficulties on this road are caused by roadworks between Knin and Gračac, near Otrić, where traffic is also slow.

Congestion on Other Highways as Well

Increased traffic is being recorded on all major routes toward the sea. On the A2 Zagreb-Macelj highway, at the Trakošćan toll plaza in the direction of Zagreb, the queue is about one kilometer long, and a bottleneck has also formed before the Zagreb West interchange.

On the Zagreb bypass, i.e., the A3 Bregana-Lipovac highway, traffic is heavier toward the Lučko toll plaza. The queue of vehicles from the direction of Buzin is about eight kilometers long. Delays and queues are also present on the A4 Goričan-Zagreb highway, from the Popovec interchange toward the Zagreb East interchange.

HAK's Appeal to Drivers

The Croatian Automobile Club warns all drivers to adjust their speed and driving style to current road conditions and to expect significantly longer travel times. They appeal for extra caution and patience and recommend checking the current traffic situation before setting off. In maritime traffic, there are currently no difficulties.
