After four seasons wearing the KK Zadar jersey, Karlo Žganec has decided to embark on a new path. The experienced 31-year-old center has officially become a new player for HKK Široki, a Bosnian-Herzegovinian club that has returned to the elite tier of the regional ABA League.
During his time at Višnjik, Žganec won three Croatian League titles and one Krešimir Ćosić Cup with the club, cementing his place among the players who have marked the modern history of Zadar basketball. His departure is the third officially confirmed exit from the club this summer, following Boris Tišma and Lovre Mazalin. Unofficially, Borna Kapusta, Adem Mekić, and Ivan Tkachenko have also not continued their collaboration with Zadar.
Although nominally a center, Žganec has built a reputation over the years as a player with exceptional basketball IQ. His greatest value was not reflected in points, but in defensive solidity and dominance on the boards. Despite not being the tallest on the court, he regularly outmuscled defenders and positioned himself perfectly for rebounds.
How much his contribution was valued is best evidenced by the words of coach Danijel Jusup. "No matter how poorly he shoots, he holds our defense together," "Karlo is often the best player on the court," Jusup said last season for eZadar, summing up the essence of Žganec's role in two sentences. Fans could often see him going through tactical ideas with the coach, confirming his status as a thinking player.
What further set him apart was his mental toughness. He never fell for opponents' provocations, and his presence and demeanor made it clear what kind of player opponents were facing. Alongside captain Ramljak, he was for years an indispensable pillar of defense that made Zadar such a respectable team.
