Disaster near Omiš: 28 Houses, 106 Vehicles, and 45 Boats Burned

Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Blaženko Boban provided detailed data on the damage from the fire that ravaged Lokve Rogoznice and Omiš, and after the City of Omiš completes its assessment, a request will be made to declare a natural disaster.

During the night between August 13 and 14, 2026, a devastating fire swept through the area of Lokva Rogoznica and Omiš, completely destroying 28 homes, 106 cars, and 45 vessels that were moored along the shore. The data was presented on Monday, August 17, 2026, by Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Blaženko Boban.

In addition to homes and vehicles, the fire also destroyed 16 other structures, including seven commercial buildings, three catering establishments, and six auxiliary structures adjacent to family homes. Partial fire damage was reported on 43 houses, 20 vehicles, and 9 vessels.

Prefect: '45 vessels also completely burned down'

"Furthermore, 45 vessels that had been pulled ashore were completely consumed by the flames," Boban told Hina. When asked about damage to agricultural land, the prefect stated that an assessment of agricultural losses has not yet been conducted, so data on potential damage to olive groves is currently unavailable.

Fire affected 23 kilometers of coastline, one fatality

According to additional information, the blaze spread across the areas of Lokva Rogoznica, Medići, Mimice, Stanići, Nemira, and Omiš, covering a strip approximately 23 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide. Around 1,000 hectares of grass, low vegetation, and pine forest were burned. The fire claimed the life of a 34-year-old seasonal worker from Bosnia and Herzegovina, dozens of people were injured, some critically, and three firefighters also sustained injuries. As many as 2,500 people were evacuated to reception centers. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and the State Attorney's Office announced that police, a fire and explosion protection inspector, and the state attorney's office conducted an investigation at the point where the fire broke out.

Request for natural disaster status after assessment

Once the City of Omiš completes its field assessment and submits the damage data, the County will file a request with the Civil Protection Headquarters to declare a natural disaster. Boban also noted that Prime Minister Andrej Plenković has announced state aid for the reconstruction of destroyed areas and structures, as well as compensation for local residents.

According to a video published by 24sata, the fire was still burning in Brzet at the time of publication.
