Music legend Arsen Dedić once revealed who the most important women in his life are. "I have several crucial women in my life. My mother, to whom I wrote 'Majka hrabrost' (Mother Courage), my daughter Sandra, who also has two songs dedicated to her, Gabi, who has 'a song about Gabi Novak,' and the one I write for the most is my granddaughter Lu. I even wrote her a song called 'Lu u ulozi Mate Hari' (Lu in the Role of Mata Hari)," said Dedić, showing how much his family means to him.
While he had a son, Matija, a renowned jazz pianist, with Gabi Novak, his first marriage to Vesna Matoš produced a daughter, Sandra. It was her life path that led her far from Croatia.
In the mid-1980s, Sandra moved to America, specifically to Los Angeles. There, she met her future husband, musician Alen Slavica, who has been a presence on the music scene for over 40 years.
The couple returned to Croatia in 2006 and spent nine years in Žaborić. But America called them back-Sandra's company, for which she worked online, recommended she return across the Atlantic for work.
Fourteen years ago, Sandra and Alen became parents to a daughter, Ema. They named her after Sandra's favorite actress, Oscar-winning Emma Thompson. The family now splits their time between America and Croatia, and Sandra, though far from her homeland, remains an important part of Arsen Dedić's family story.
