An Irish Air Corps aircraft carrying the alleged leader of a criminal cartel departed from Dubai. He is the first to be extradited under a new standing agreement, with an armored vehicle and heightened security awaiting him in Dublin.
An Irish Air Corps aircraft carrying Daniel Kinahan departed from Dubai for Ireland on Sunday, August 9, 2026, marking the end of a years-long legal battle and the beginning of the largest security operation for a single prisoner in recent Irish history. Kinahan (49), whom authorities consider the leader of the notorious criminal cartel, is expected to appear before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin as early as Sunday evening.
The flight departed from Al Maktoum International Airport at 10:30 AM Irish time, with landing at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, County Dublin, expected around 7 PM. On board, alongside the suspect, is a team of Irish national police (Gardaí) officers who flew to collect him on Saturday morning.
Upon landing, Kinahan will not face the usual procedure. He will be immediately arrested and loaded into a new, armored, and explosion-proof vehicle from the Irish Prison Service, acquired specifically for transporting prisoners considered high-risk. A convoy of armed special forces officers will escort him from Baldonnel to the Special Criminal Court building in the northern part of Dublin, where security will also be at its highest level.
His first appearance before the court, a panel of three judges that sits without a jury, is expected to be brief. After that, Kinahan will be transferred to Portlaoise maximum-security prison, where he will await trial expected next year.
Kinahan is the first person extradited from the United Arab Emirates to the Republic of Ireland under the new, standing extradition treaty that came into force last year (2025). His close associate, Sean McGovern, was extradited last year under a special, one-off arrangement and has since been sentenced to 24 years in prison for managing the Kinahan cartel's crimes.
Kinahan, who has lived openly in Dubai with his wife and children for the past ten years, was arrested in April 2026 after an Irish court issued a warrant. He attempted to challenge the extradition, but his legal efforts were unsuccessful. He now faces a charge of directing an organized criminal group.
The case has a strong international dimension. The U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Kinahan and his family members in April 2022, describing the cartel as one of the world's most dangerous criminal organizations. Pressure also intensified due to a feud within the Irish underworld that, according to available data, resulted in 18 deaths. Kinahan himself survived an assassination attempt in 2016 during a shooting at a Dublin hotel, after which he left Ireland.
Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Micheál Martin on Sunday paid "strong tribute" to the police (An Garda Síochána), the Garda Commissioner, and successive Ministers for Justice for their success in tackling organized crime.
"I also acknowledge the authorities of the United Arab Emirates for their strong cooperation with Ireland in recent years in this area. Ireland has worked hard to develop strong partnerships globally, because international criminal activities are global, and the links are global, so global partnerships are key," Martin said, as reported by the Irish Times.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the resilience of the security forces in the face of threats. "We have faced threats to the state in the past, very serious threats over a long period, and our police and security forces have been resilient in the face of those threats," he stated. "Likewise, regarding the threats of modern gang crime and its international dimension, we have strengthened our capacities, we have strengthened our laws and our ability to undermine such activities."
The extradition of Daniel Kinahan represents the culmination of a years-long investigation by the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and intense diplomacy between Dublin and Abu Dhabi. Although this is only the beginning of a legal process in which the charges have yet to be proven, and Kinahan is presumed innocent until a final verdict, the scale of security measures clearly demonstrates how seriously the authorities take this case.
