The humanitarian foundation "Budi human" has launched an urgent fundraising campaign for the boy Kosta Lešević, who is battling an extremely rare genetic disease. According to current knowledge of doctors and scientists, Kosta is the only patient in the world with this unique gene mutation.
Kosta's struggle began when he was just 17 months old, after a COVID-19 infection. At that time, he lost all motor and verbal functions. After extensive diagnostics, it was confirmed that he suffers from an extremely rare genetic change that has not been recorded in any other patient so far.
His mother, Nevena Bogdanović, described the years-long search for a solution: "In search of hope, we visited many countries and consulted the best experts. After years of struggle, I managed to get in contact with scientists who agreed to develop a personalized gene therapy specifically for Kosta. The cost of this unique drug is three million US dollars."
The initial plan was for Kosta to receive the drug at the end of July, but due to administrative procedures and a lack of funds, the therapy has been postponed to February next year. To continue the production of the drug and the treatment, $600,000 must be paid by mid-August.
Kosta is currently in Barcelona, where he arrived at the end of April for hip surgery. Unfortunately, after the surgery, serious complications arose, and he has been in the hospital for three months, alternating between the intensive care unit and the hospital ward. Due to these unforeseen circumstances, about 130,000 euros have been allocated from his treatment budget, almost completely depleting the funds raised. Since he is still not stable enough for home care, additional funds are needed to continue his hospital stay.
