Dinamo's footballers secured a convincing 5-0 victory against Lithuanian side Kauno Žalgiris in the first leg of the Champions League third qualifying round, played on August 4, 2026, at Maksimir. After the first 45 minutes, it was already 2-0, and in the second half, the "Blues" added three more goals, practically securing their passage ahead of the return leg scheduled in seven days.
The scorers for the Zagreb side were Miha Zajc (32nd minute), Scott McKenna (33rd), Mateo Lisica (51st), Luka Stojković (76th), and Lukas Kačavenda (90+4). Zajc found the net with a spectacular strike from 20 meters, while Stojković was precise from 16 meters.
Coach Mario Kovačević did not hide his satisfaction after the match. "Congratulations to my players; we were good from the first minute. It wasn't easy; they held a low block until the first goal. But when you enter the opponent's box that many times, it becomes easier after the first goal. And I'm glad we didn't stop at 2-0, that we scored more in the second half," Kovačević stated for MAXSport.
He particularly highlighted the importance of the first goal for the match's development: "As soon as the first goal went in, the second came on its own. We're satisfied with the performance and the result." He also reflected on the tough start to the season, recalling the clash with Swiss side Thun. "The match against Thun was our toughest. Once we got past that, I said we'd be better. That proved true against Belupo, and today it's important that we've, so to speak, settled this tie ahead of the return leg," he emphasized. The Lithuanian champions, led by former Rijeka coach Željko Sopić, failed to match the hosts, with their only serious chance coming via a shot that hit the crossbar.
Kovačević particularly praised Luka Stojković, who, along with his goal, also provided an assist for the opening goal. "I know best what he's like; when the team came together and he became the main player, we immediately improved. All my players are quality, but a player like him makes everyone else better-that's how it is in every team in the world," emphasized Dinamo's coach.
He also commented on Lukas Kačavenda, who came off the bench in the 71st minute and set the final 5-0 score in stoppage time, marking his second consecutive European goal. "I was sorry when he left last year, but there were many midfielders. We lacked a number eight when he returned; he had an offer, but he showed from the first preparation match that he's one of us. I'm happy for him; he showed his talent at Lokomotiva, had injury misfortunes, and I wish him to continue like this," Kovačević said.
Despite the high lead, the "Blues" strategist announced a serious approach to the return leg in Lithuania. "We're going to Lithuania seriously, for a win. We want to collect those points. We won't protect the result; we have a good week, play well, and then we'll think further. From the first minute in Lithuania, we'll seek the win," he stated. Due to the congested European schedule, Dinamo won't be able to play the league match against Rijeka this weekend. "Unfortunately, we can't play against Rijeka this weekend; it wasn't our choice, but that's how the schedule is," Kovačević explained.
The potential opponent in the playoff is Norwegian side Viking, who defeated Bodø/Glimt 5-0 in their league. "We still have to get past this. Of course, we'll start scouting Viking slowly; we have a week of peace to prepare for the return leg. And Viking is an excellent team, from what we've heard so far," Kovačević added.
Dinamo's coach also paid compliments to his counterpart on the Kauno Žalgiris bench. "We've always had a good relationship, even since our playing days. I congratulate him; he's getting the maximum out of this team. They've achieved a historic success, heading to the Conference League. I wish him all the best; he's a true sportsman and colleague, and I respect him."
Finally, he touched on potential changes in the squad before the transfer window closes. "A coach always expects new players; there might be arrivals and departures. We'll see what the management has decided. We truly live for the Champions League; we need to get past Žalgiris, and then we'll think further," Kovačević concluded.
