Lucija Mamić Laid to Rest at Mirogoj: Here's Why She Wasn't Buried in Herzegovina

On Tuesday afternoon, at Zagreb's Mirogoj cemetery, the final farewell to Lucija Mamić, mother of Zdravko, Zoran, and Stojan Mamić, took place in the presence of family, close friends, and acquaintances. The public was most curious as to why her sons Zdravko and Zoran, who have been in Bosnia and Herzegovina for some time, did not attend.

Both had moved there to avoid serving prison sentences following final verdicts by Croatian courts. Had they come to Zagreb, they would have been arrested immediately, so they did not attend their mother's funeral.

Family Tomb Was Decisive

In the lead-up to the funeral, the public questioned why the family did not arrange the burial in Herzegovina, which would have allowed the sons to attend the service. Although the Mamić family has roots in the village of Zidine near Buško Blato, in the Tomislavgrad area, the Croatian capital was chosen instead.

Lucija Mamić and her husband Josip moved to Zagreb in 1956, where they spent most of their lives and raised their children. The main reason for the burial at Mirogoj is the family tomb where her husband Josip has been interred since 2003, so Lucija was ultimately laid to rest beside him.
