An extensive operation to intensify maritime traffic safety surveillance, named "Safe Navigation 2026 Šibenik," will take place in the Šibenik aquatorium on Thursday, August 20, 2026. It will be conducted by officers of the Šibenik Port Authority and its branch offices, with support from the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), and will run from 10 AM to 6 PM.
The goal of this coordinated operation is to enforce order at sea during the peak of the nautical season. Inspectors and harbor masters will focus on key violations that most often endanger lives: excessive speed and planing in areas where it is strictly prohibited, such as near the coast, in channels, and narrow passages; oversight of boat rentals (rent-a-boat) and verification of proper permits; and inspection of passenger vessels operating day trips.
All measures are regulated by the Ordinance on the Safety of Navigation in Internal Waters and the Territorial Sea of Croatia, which also defines how maritime traffic surveillance and management are conducted.
In addition to enforcement measures and inevitable penalties for violators, the Ministry emphasizes that this operation also has a strong educational component.
"We want to directly emphasize to maritime traffic participants the importance of adhering to safety regulations. We are in a period of exceptionally heavy nautical traffic, with a dramatic increase in the presence of domestic and foreign vessels in the Adriatic, which unfortunately also brings a higher number of maritime accidents and incidents," the Ministry stated.
The Port Authority appeals to all boaters, local residents, and tourists to adhere to navigation rules, monitor weather forecasts, and protect their own and others' lives at sea through responsible behavior.
