Madonna said goodbye on Instagram on Saturday to her longtime collaborator and friend, music producer William Orbit, who died on July 23 at his home at the age of 69. The news of the Grammy-winning artist's death was announced by his family only on Friday, "with deep sorrow," without specifying the cause of death.
"You pressed a magic button in me and I fell into a galaxy of unfulfilled dreams," Madonna wrote, adding: "Your music gave me a magic carpet to fly on, which took me to many places."
The British producer, whose real name was William Wainwright, left an indelible mark on the music industry. His collaboration with Madonna, especially on the 1998 album "Ray of Light," is considered a pivotal turning point in her career. By blending electronic dance music, ambient techno, and pop, Orbit helped create a modern sound that earned the album three Grammys, including Best Pop Album in 1999.
"I had an epiphany when I met you and started working with you. I realized that music doesn't have to fit into categories or genres. So we created our own," the singer recalled. Along with the message, she posted a video from the Grammy ceremony where they accepted the award together.
Madonna noted that this period was also extremely important to her on a personal level. "In many ways, you were my ray of light-as was my daughter Lola, who was born around that time," she wrote. She also described the atmosphere in the studio, which was often "like a church," where she would wait in silence for his ideas to "explode from the keyboard or guitar."
"I sang in ways I had never sung before. I used words without caring whether they made sense or not," she added. In addition to "Ray of Light," they also collaborated on the albums "Music" in 2000 and "MDNA" in 2012.
