The Ukrainian high jumper matched the record of Spain's Ruth Beitia, winning her third straight European title in Birmingham.
Ukrainian athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the gold medal in the high jump at the 27th European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, confirming her dominance on the European stage. The final took place on August 15, 2026, at Alexander Stadium in England, with the news reported a day later, on August 16, according to the Kyiv Independent.
Mahuchikh secured the gold by clearing 1.97 meters on her first attempt. This brought her a third consecutive European title, following her victories in 2022 with a clearance of 1.95 meters and in 2024 with 2.01 meters.
With this win, Mahuchikh matched the record of Spain's Ruth Beitia, becoming only the second woman in history to win the European high jump title three times. Beitia claimed her titles in 2012, 2014, and 2016.
Mahuchikh, originally from Dnipro, currently holds the world record in the women's high jump with a clearance of 2.10 meters. In addition to her European titles, she also won Olympic gold at the 2024 Paris Games.
The silver medal went to Poland's Maria Zhodzik, while the bronze was claimed by Montenegro's Marija Vuković. Both cleared 1.95 meters but failed to clear 1.97 meters in all three attempts.
Another Ukrainian representative, Iryna Herashchenko, finished fifth with a clearance of 1.92 meters, as reported by Suspilne.
