The 'Summer in Marija Bistrica' event, organized by the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Marija Bistrica, enters its central phase with the traditional celebration of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The central Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Bistrica on Friday, August 15, 2026, will be led by Zagreb Archbishop Mons. Dražen Kutleša, and the Mass will be broadcast live on HRT.
Candlelight Procession on the Eve of the Feast
The celebration begins on the evening before the Assumption, on Thursday, August 14, 2026, when the Way of Light and a candlelight procession will be held at the Bistrica Calvary starting at 8:30 p.m. Following the procession, a Mass will be celebrated, led by Reverend Domagoj Matošević, the economist of the Archdiocese of Zagreb.
Mass Schedule on the Assumption
On the feast day itself, August 15, Masses will be held at the Shrine at six times: 6 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m., and 8 p.m. The central Mass at 10 a.m. will be led by Archbishop Kutleša, and the broadcast on HRT will allow faithful who cannot physically participate in the pilgrimage to follow the celebration. A broadcast of the Sunday Mass at 10 a.m. is also ensured.
Cultural and Entertainment Program Continues
The 'Summer in Marija Bistrica' program does not stop with the feast. Already on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at the Square of Pope John Paul II, starting at 9 a.m., an exhibition of edible, poisonous, and medicinal mushrooms that grow in Croatian regions will be set up. The exhibition is organized by the Mushroom Picker Association 'Zagorski vrganj' from Zabok.
Music lovers can also look forward to 'SINA memoriam 4, a jam for Sina', which will take place on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Hudekova bašča starting at 9 p.m. The well-known rock band from Bistrica, Giberry Sons, will take the stage. The traditional Vozočašće of horse-drawn carriages is scheduled for Sunday, August 23, 2026.
The 'Summer in Marija Bistrica' event lasts until September 26, offering visitors a variety of religious, cultural, traditional, and entertainment content over the coming weeks.
