Croatian actress Marijana Mikulić shared an extremely personal account on Instagram about raising her son Jakov, who has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. While answering followers' questions, she was particularly moved by a message from one follower: "How do you cope with autism every day? I fall apart ten times a day..." reports Slobodna Dalmacija.
Not Giving Up Every Day
Marijana's response was raw and emotional. "I cry, I fall apart, I want to give up on everything, then I scoop myself up from the bottom of the puddle, wipe my nose and start over. Every day it's a new decision not to give up. Anyone who says they never fall apart either has a lot of help and support, or they're lying," the actress wrote, according to Slobodna Dalmacija.
Therapies, Progress, and Strengths
Mikulić has been openly speaking about her son's challenges and progress for years. She explained how much effort is required: "Jakov attends a pile of therapies and works a lot at home. The result is progress, for which I always emphasize it's 'Best of', to motivate others, but also ourselves." She added that Jakov lags behind his peers in many ways, but she and her husband Josip look for his strengths and work on them. "The most important thing is not to compare the child to others, but only to himself, where he was yesterday, where he is today, and where he will be tomorrow," she said.
Marijana and Josip Mikulić have been married for 20 years and have three sons: Ivan, Andrija, and Jakov. Her honesty has drawn numerous reactions from followers who recognized themselves in the feelings described.
