On the third anniversary of her mother's death, the Croatian comedian publicly called out the judiciary because the convicted driver Hrvoje has yet to begin serving his prison sentence.
"Today marks three years since the drunk idiot Hrvoje killed my mom with his speeding and faulty driving," Croatian comedian Marina Orsag (46) began her post on Facebook and Instagram on August 13, 2026, the third anniversary of her mother's death. In the post, she also shared a screenshot of her lawyer's message stating that she would speak with the presiding judge in early September about the next steps in the case.
Marina Orsag's mother died on August 12, 2023, in a traffic accident on the Zagreb - Varaždin highway. According to Orsag's earlier posts, the accident was caused by an intoxicated driver. In the Jutarnji list series "Reci!", the comedian detailed the circumstances of the tragedy.
"On the Zagreb - Varaždin highway, she pulled over onto the hard shoulder, ironically, to avoid endangering traffic, because she needed to quickly call my sister to ask where exactly to turn off. At that moment, a man with over 1.27 per mille of alcohol in his blood slammed into her car at 160 kilometers per hour. The force of the impact pushed her another twenty meters," Orsag recounted.
Driver Hrvoje was finally sentenced to four years in prison and a five-year driving ban after his release. However, six months after the final verdict, Orsag received information from her lawyer that further enraged her. The lawyer's message stated that the "case file is with the enforcement judge at the Zagreb County Court" and that he would try to find out in early September when the convict might "roughly" begin serving his sentence.
"It's been six months since he was finally sentenced to four years in prison and five years without a driver's license after release. This is the information I received from my lawyer today: 'When he would roughly start serving his sentence...' Roughly. Start. As if he's starting a gym membership. I'll roughly shove it up the Croatian judiciary's ass," Orsag wrote in her post.
In the rest of the post, the comedian told her mother that she no longer wants to make dedications on the anniversary of her death until the convicted driver ends up in prison. "I don't want to, Mom, on this day anymore, have memories of you and make dedications. Not until he ends up in prison. Besides, today is the worst day for that. There's your birthday, so many beautiful dates with memories. On this day, I just want to disappear, and I want Hrvoje to disappear even more. Roughly," she wrote.
She concluded the post by noting that her lawyer is not at fault because he's just relaying the words, and that as a public figure she gains nothing from such posts. Her post sparked numerous reactions from followers, who expressed condolences and support in the comments, but also shared her frustration with the functioning of the judicial system. "The Croatian judiciary is the biggest cancer of our society," "It takes more and more strength and stomach to live in this septic pit of a state," and "I'm sorry, and it's hard to even read something like that... Stay strong" are just some of the comments she received.
Orsag has previously spoken about the tragedy, highlighting the immense pain she feels. "My mom was killed by a drunk driver on the highway. The pain I feel is immense, and that man is still walking the streets, and since the trial is dragging on so long, you're just an uncontrolled mass of rage, anger, disappointment, and everything else," she said in the Jutarnji list series "Reci!"
In December 2024, Orsag posted details of the accident and the court proceedings on social media, stating that the driver had 1.27 per mille of alcohol measured an hour and a half after getting behind the wheel, and that he was driving far above the speed limit, swerving across the road and the hard shoulder. She also claimed that he lied in court about his financial situation, remorse, and suicidal behavior, while simultaneously opening a new car dealership with his partner. "A year and a month after the killing, the judge gave him..." she wrote at the time, leaving the sentence unfinished in the post.
In the same post, she described the judge's attitude toward her and the lawyers: "At the same time, the judge treats us, our lawyer, and the state attorney as if we're trying to frame a hero for a crime, and we can't lie for a second because it's punishable, but his lying isn't."
Orsag described her mother as "a wonderful single mother who selflessly gave not only to us, but to everyone around her, and without her, a lot of people would be less happy." She recently revealed that she is moving to the Netherlands with her long-time partner, with whom she entered into a civil partnership this summer.
