The U.S. First Lady has so far helped reunite 34 children and families separated during the war in Ukraine, the White House announced.
U.S. First Lady Melania Trump on Monday, August 17, 2026, facilitated the reunion of another child with their family after they were separated during the conflict in Ukraine, the White House press service announced, as reported by Russia's state news agency TASS.
In a statement released by the Office of the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump highlighted the power of a mother and child being reunited. "There is nothing more powerful than reuniting a mother with her child after a long period of separation," she said, adding that she and her representative are focused on assisting with the next reunion of people separated from their loved ones due to the war between Ukraine and Russia.
The White House links these efforts to a letter that Melania Trump previously sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the statement, the First Lady's efforts have so far helped reunite 34 children and families since she wrote that letter.
The war in Ukraine has led to the separation of numerous children from their families. In May 2026, the EU Council imposed sanctions on individuals and legal entities responsible for the abduction of Ukrainian children from temporarily occupied territories, Ukrainska Pravda reported.
Lithuania, also according to Ukrainska Pravda, has pledged more than 10 million euros to support initiatives related to the return of children abducted by Russia, including psychological and medical rehabilitation, strengthening child protection systems, and ensuring accountability for such crimes.
Russia's Children's Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova previously praised Melania Trump's contribution to reuniting Russian and Ukrainian children with their families, TASS reports. The White House statement did not specify the nationality of the child or the family.
