Mercedes: Antonelli and Russell's Rivalry Is Healthy

Mercedes has opened the door on its internal team dynamics, revealing how the relationship between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell works. With both drivers currently fighting for the top of the Formula 1 World Championship standings, the team says their rivalry is extremely healthy and productive.

Shared Goal Ahead of Personal Ambitions

Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord highlighted in an interview with the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show that he is particularly impressed by the way the two work together. "What's particularly impressive is how they work together," Lord said.

Lord emphasized that there have been periods in Formula 1 when relationships between teammates became significantly more strained. "George and Kimi obviously want to beat each other, because that's the nature of the sport, but it's a healthy rivalry," he explained. He added that there are no games or hidden agendas, and both are focused on seizing the opportunity the team has given them.

While they care about their positions in the drivers' standings, Lord claims their primary focus is on delivering results for the constructors' championship and helping the team succeed.

Competition Raises the Team's Standard

Simone Resta, Mercedes' deputy technical director, agrees that the competition between the two drivers is a major asset for the team. "We're lucky to have a very strong driver pairing. George and Kimi are incredibly fast. Both have taken pole positions this year, and both have won races," Resta stated.

Resta added that across different weekends and circumstances, both have delivered outstanding performances for the team. "The competition between them constantly raises the standard, and ultimately that allows the team to achieve better results," he concluded.

A Season Full of Success

Mercedes was tipped as the favorite by many ahead of the 2026 season, and a strong start to the year has justified that. Russell celebrated victory in the opening race in Australia, while Antonelli took the championship lead with a string of consecutive wins. In the third race of the season in Japan, Antonelli became the youngest championship leader in the sport's history.

While the Italian still holds the top spot in the standings, Russell sits third after a few more challenging weekends, which further underscores just how close their internal battle really is.
