As Croatia grapples with extreme heat, meteorologist Krunoslav Mikec brings news of imminent relief, though it won't be welcome everywhere. According to his forecast for HRT, after a sunny and very hot Thursday, a refreshing change arrives as early as tomorrow with clouds and more frequent rain, especially in the continental parts of the country.
Mikec explained that today, very warm air flowed in a mid-level pressure field, but with the approach of a front tomorrow, a less warm but more humid air mass is expected to move over the northern half of the country, leading to more unstable weather. "Although most areas saw sunny and very hot conditions today, the afternoon brought rain and thunderstorms in the interior of Istria and Dalmatia, with locally intense downpours. Tomorrow, more clouds and more frequent rain, primarily in inland areas," Mikec forecast for HRT.
In the east of the country, tomorrow is expected to be partly cloudy with sunny spells. Rain is expected in places, with locally heavier showers and thunderstorms possible. With a north and northwest wind, it will be slightly less hot than today, with highs between 31 and 35 degrees Celsius. In western areas, temperatures will mostly range from 29 to 32 degrees, while morning lows will drop to between 19 and 22 degrees. Here, too, more clouds are expected with some rain as early as the morning, and stronger showers with thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon.
On the northern Adriatic, the bura wind is expected, with strong and gusty conditions in the Velebit area, especially during the morning. In these areas, there will be periods of moderate to increased cloudiness with a chance of scattered rain and thunderstorms. "Temperatures in Lika and Gorski Kotar will rise to between 28 and 31 degrees, while on the northern Adriatic, highs will be between 34 and 37 degrees, as predicted for most of Dalmatia," Mikec added.
The meteorologist announced that in the second part of Friday, local showers with thunderstorms are expected. In the north of the region, the bura wind will blow, spreading elsewhere in the evening, with southwest and northwest winds during the day and afternoon. "Mostly sunny is expected, primarily in the interior, with local showers and thunderstorms in the second part of the day, possibly more intense," Mikec emphasized.
For the far south, the forecast brings plenty of sunshine, with only a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms as clouds develop during the day. Highs will range from 34 to 38 degrees, with lows between 22 and 27 degrees. "On Saturday, which won't be too hot, there will be scattered rain and local showers with thunderstorms inland, along with a north wind. From Sunday, mostly sunny, with only occasional showers, and temperatures will rise slightly again. At the sea, it will continue to be similarly hot as in recent days," Mikec stated for HRT.
The State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) has issued a red meteoalarm for tomorrow, indicating extremely dangerous weather, for the Rijeka, Split, and Dubrovnik regions. DHMZ warns citizens to take precautionary measures. "Take action; extremely high temperatures are expected. Protect yourself, children, and the elderly. Follow the advice given by the authorities. Possible disruptions to certain infrastructure," DHMZ urged.
According to DHMZ's official forecast for tomorrow, the weather will be partly sunny, especially in Dalmatia, but also more unstable. Although clouds will be variable, light rain is possible during the night and morning in the interior, with showers and thunderstorms becoming more likely from noon, which could be locally heavy. The wind will be moderate, occasionally strong in gusts, from the north and northeast, while in the east it will be northwest. On the Adriatic, a moderate to strong bura will blow, with gale-force gusts at the foot of Velebit in the morning and evening, and in Dalmatia, northwest and southwest winds in the afternoon. Air temperatures will range from 18 to 23 degrees in the lowest areas, and from 23 to 28 degrees on the Adriatic, while daily highs will reach 28 to 33 degrees, and 34 to 37 degrees on the Adriatic and in the east.
