According to Italian media reports, Milan has inquired about signing Croatian international defender Marin Pongračić from Fiorentina. This transfer would be the biggest in the 28-year-old's career.
After Luka Modrić confirmed his stay at Milan, another Croatian international could be heading to the Rossoneri ranks. As reported by Tuttomercatoweb, Milan has inquired about the possibility of signing Marin Pongračić, Fiorentina's 28-year-old center-back. A potential move to the seven-time European champions would be the biggest step forward in the Croatian defender's career.
Pongračić is currently in pre-season training with Fiorentina, now managed by Fabio Grosso since this summer. However, his status at the Florence-based club has become uncertain. Although he has a valid contract until the summer of 2029, competition in defense has intensified with the arrivals of Brazilian Vieira and Romanian Radu Dragusin, who joined on loan from Tottenham. It is precisely for this reason, as reported by the Italian transfer-specialist website, that Pongračić's stay at the club is not guaranteed.
Last season, the Croatian center-back was a regular for Fiorentina, making 48 official appearances across all competitions. Of those, he played 35 matches in Serie A and 10 in the Conference League, where he scored his only goal of the season away against Polish side Raków.
For the 28-year-old international, who made his debut for the Vatreni in November 2020 and has since earned 23 caps, a move to Milan would represent the biggest deal of his career so far. Pongračić has previously made a significant leap by playing for Borussia Dortmund on loan from Wolfsburg during the 2021/22 season, but now he could, for the first time, play for one of Italy's top clubs.
It's worth noting that Pongračić was recently in action at the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, where he played three matches for the Croatian national team. Before Fiorentina, he had stints at 1860 Munich, Red Bull Salzburg, Wolfsburg, and Lecce.
While speculation about Pongračić's future continues, another Croatian international, Ivan Perišić, is already in competitive rhythm. The Croatian vice-captain registered an assist for PSV in the first match of the Dutch league season, which ended in a 2-2 draw against Fortuna Sittard.
