Sea at Zadar County Beaches Mostly Excellent

Bathers in Zadar County can rest easy, the sea is of excellent quality at almost all beaches. According to the latest data from the Zadar Public Health Institute, out of 192 locations where samples are regularly taken, 190 earn the highest rating.
During the five tests conducted so far this season, excellent sea quality was confirmed at as many as 99 percent of the points. Only two beaches in the town of Nin, Prodorica and Kraljičina beach, were rated as "good." It is important to note that no pollution has been recorded at any beach in the county.
"During the five sea quality tests conducted so far, at 190 (99.0%) points on Zadar County beaches, the sea was of excellent quality. Only at two beaches, Prodorica and Kraljičina beach in the town of Nin, was the sea of good quality," said Danijela Peroš-Pucar from the Department of Health Ecology and Environmental Protection at the Zadar Public Health Institute for Zadarski list.
Although there are currently no permanent issues, Peroš-Pucar explains that good and satisfactory results occasionally occur. The most common causes are the inflow of wastewater from land due to faulty sewage systems, the existence of septic tanks in households, or irresponsible discharge of wastewater from ship tanks. She added that no beach in the county has a continuously poor rating.
The Zadar Public Health Institute conducts a total of ten tests during the bathing season, and the sixth is currently underway. The analysis is complex and includes monitoring microbiological indicators, intestinal enterococci and the bacterium Escherichia coli, which are considered key indicators of pollution.
"Microbiological indicators, i.e., intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli, are considered the most significant indicators of sea pollution. To promptly inform the public about the results of bathing water quality, the so-called individual rating, we publish it immediately after each test," explained Peroš-Pucar.
Incidentally, Croatia is one of the first Mediterranean countries to introduce systematic monitoring of sea quality. In some counties, this has been done since 1986, and the national program along the entire Adriatic coast has been implemented since 1989.
