Dragan Babić, a physician and academic from Mostar, has been non-final sentenced and fined for two separate incidents on Makarska beach where he insulted guests from Sarajevo on ethnic and religious grounds.
The Municipal Court in Makarska, Permanent Service in Imotski, has found Mostar academic and physician Dragan Babić guilty of a prolonged misdemeanor of disturbing public order and peace and discrimination. The incidents occurred in June and August this year on a beach in Makarska, where Babić insulted guests from Sarajevo.
The court imposed a fine of €663.61, but €39.82 was deducted for time spent in police custody. The final amount Babić must pay is €623.79. The proceedings were initiated based on the indictment proposal of the Split-Dalmatia Police Administration, Makarska Police Station, and the verdict was rendered on August 7, 2026, in an expedited procedure, which has not yet become final.
According to court documents, the first case was recorded on June 26, 2026, at around 6:30 PM on the beach at Šetalište dr. fra Jure Radića. Babić disturbed public order and peace with loud shouts and insults based on national and religious affiliation. He addressed one person, D. S., with the words: "You are a real Balinka, what kind of names did you give your children," and told another, I. B.: "You disappointed me. Why do you hang out with Balijas? Sarajevo is Tehran."
The second incident occurred on August 6, 2026, at around 11 AM at the same location. Babić addressed a man with the words: "Hey, hey, are those your children or grandchildren? Why don't you go to Turkey, Balijas?" after which he continued shouting and making vulgar insults towards his minor children born in 2016 and 2019.
From publicly available information, it appears that Babić is associated with the Psychiatry Clinic of the University Clinical Hospital Mostar and professional psychiatric organizations. He resides in Mostar but also holds Croatian citizenship. The court determined that his behavior constituted a prolonged misdemeanor under the Anti-Discrimination Act.
The Makarska Police Station brought Babić before the duty misdemeanor judge on August 7. "After the expedited misdemeanor proceedings, a non-final guilty verdict was rendered the same day, and the deadline for filing an appeal is ongoing," the Municipal Court in Makarska responded to Oslobođenje.
