The reconstruction of the open-air city market in Vinkovci is entering a new phase. After months of archaeological research that uncovered a rich site, Mayor Josip Romić announced the start of concrete construction work, as reported by Vinkulja Vinkovci.
The project officially began in March 2026, but the planned pace of work was halted by the archaeological excavations. The market turned out to be an archaeologically interesting and valuable site: archaeologists found as many as 44 Roman graves in the area, of which 19 have been excavated. A masonry tomb from the Roman Empire period drew particular interest.
Mayor Romić thanked the archaeologists for their effort and interesting discoveries, but made it clear that it was time for a new phase. "Thank you to our archaeologists for their effort and interesting discoveries, but enough underground work-we're starting construction," Romić said via the City of Vinkovci.
According to him, the archaeological work as part of the renovation of the market's exterior is nearly complete. "In the coming days, the final touches on the parking lot will be done, as well as the construction of the foundations for the future steel structure," the mayor added.
Once the work is finished, the Vinkovci market will be one of the most modern in this part of Croatia. The plan includes installing a canopy, building a parking lot, and renovating the road and pedestrian areas. A special space is also planned where family farms (OPGs) can present their products.
Marina Hodak Domaćinović, director of VIA, stated that the total project value is just over €3.8 million, with 85 percent of the funds secured from European Union funds.
Due to the work, certain streets will be closed to traffic every Wednesday and Saturday, i.e., market days, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. According to Novosti.hr, these are sections of Vladimira Kovačića Street, from the intersection with Kralja Zvonimira Street to the intersection with Zagrebačka Street, and part of Blok tržnica Street, from number 21 to the intersection with Anina Street, or to the intersection with Vladimira Kovačevića Street.
During this time, traffic will only be allowed for residents and emergency vehicles, with special traffic regulation measures in place.
